Kids' Day is a partnership between The Modesto Bee and The Salvation Army for the benefit of our local at-risk youth at The Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center in South Modesto. A safe haven for these children in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Modesto, The Red Shield provides encouraging, positive character building activities; educational, social and spiritual programs meant to impact both families and our community. The Red Shield is a place for our local at-risk youth to go for a wholesome environment to play, learn, receive spiritual guidance, and most importantly, a place to gain that sense of self-worth among those who really do care about them. Kids’ Day provides an opportunity for local people to help local children as 100% of the proceeds go directly to The Red Shield. Without this effort these children would not have the opportunities that all youth deserves!
Every spring The Modesto Bee prints a special edition of the regular newspaper. That special edition includes the daily paper along with a separate section of stories and photographs about the Salvation Army Red Shield's programs for children in Modesto.
Sponsors account for about three quarters of the total Kids' Day fund raising. Volunteers from the community call upon local businesses, their friends, families and co-workers for donations. Each individual or organization who donates $100 or more will be listed in The Modesto Bee thank you ad. Larger donations can result in more advertising in The Modesto Bee.
On Kids' Day this effort takes on a different and more creative form. In a throwback to the old days of hawking newspapers directly to customers, volunteers man Kids' Day Corners throughout Modesto. Drivers can buy Kids' Day papers for just $1.00. Many motorists give more.
This year Kids' Day will be held on Tuesday May 21, 2013. We want to exceed last years' goal and offer more help with the positive programs that are reaching youth in our community. With your help, we can do it!
